The Order of the Native Daughters of the
Golden West is pre-eminently
a patriotic organization, founded on the principles of: Love of Home.
Devotion to our Flag (United States of America).
Veneration of the Pioneers (of California).
Faith in the Existence of God.
Ever since the day of the Order’s inception, the ritualistic ceremonies have stressed respect for the laws of the United States of America, reverence for her institutions, and fidelity to her service at all times.
Love of California is manifest in the Order’s unceasing efforts to promote the study of her romantic history and reverence for the memory of the sturdy Pioneer Fathers and Mothers. Thousands of biographies of the early settlers have been gathered by Parlors throughout the State and are preserved by Grand Parlor in handsomely bound books known as the Pioneer Roster.
An Historical Room, in the Emma G. Foley Wing of the Native Daughters Home, is maintained for the display of relics and other articles of historic value, which have been presented to the Order,
By marking historic spots, preserving early day relics and traditions, and assisting in restoring venerable Missions, which stand as monuments to culture brought from the Old to the New world, the Order honors the stalwart builders of the Golden West.
In the interest of conserving California’s wondrous beauty spots, a grove of magnificent redwoods in Humboldt County was purchased and dedicated as a Memorial to the Pioneers of California. The Order has also assisted in the establishment of the South Grove of the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, thus preserving these wondrous pines.
Participation of Native Daughters Parlors in the up-building of individual communities has earned civic recognition for the Order. Patriotic responsibilities are many and include unceasing efforts to aid in the rehabilitation of war veterans.
The Native Daughters of the Golden West Children’s Foundation is a child welfare project close to the heart of every member. It serves children from infancy to the eighteenth year regardless of race, color or creed who are not eligible for any other existing aid for their particular needs. This service reaches the average income families who sometimes find that the needs of their children are greater than ability to finance. This brings the great reward of a smile of an ailing child made well — the knowledge that a child is a life and a life is important,
The encouragement of higher education is evidenced by the scholarships that the Grand Parlor has established for native-born young women at Mills College and at any campus of the University of California,
The Annie L. Adair Scholarship was founded for the purpose of aiding young men and women toward business careers,
The Sue J. Irwin Scholarship is available to an accredited California University, Vocational or Trade School for young men and women.
The Bertha A. Briggs Veterans Scholarship Fund is available to veterans or dependents of veterans at institutions of higher learning in the State of California; also, for tuition aid for veterans at trade, vocational or special schools, and for particular needs of veterans for health, comfort and welfare.
Further indication of the interest of this Order in the youth of our land is the sponsoring of Junior Native Daughter Units.
Also, an historical art contest is sponsored in local high schools, with the finals contest held at the annual Grand Parlor Session.
A cherished project for the care of the Order’s own membership is the Native Daughters Home, located at 555 Baker Street, San Francisco. The home is also available to members who desire to visit in San Francisco for a night, a few days, or an indefinite period, and may do so by making arrangements with the manager,
Through support of these commendable objectives and adherence to the lofty principles upon which the Order is founded, the members justify their existence as an Order and endeavor to prove to the world that they are worthy of their great heritage.
One of the greatest rewards of membership is the making of many lasting friendships in working and enjoying social activities together.
Eligible women, born in California, should be proud to avail themselves of the privilege of becoming members of the Order of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, which has Subordinate Parlors located throughout the length and breadth of California.
Because Native Daughters Parlors have so many activities, the following standing committees, which function in most Parlors, will give ample opportunity for members to serve their Parlor and the State of California
